Vinyl vs Aluminium Windows: Which Is Better?

Vinyl vs Aluminium Windows: Which Is Better?

Your home’s windows can have a huge impact on certain elements such as energy efficiency, thermal insulation, and of course, appearance.

There are many choices of window styles to choose from, however vinyl and aluminium are the most popular to choose from. These two types of windows, aluminium and vinyl, have many features that differentiate them from each other. Each material has specific qualities to make them the product you may prefer as a homeowner.

Durability

Aluminium windows are the superior window, due to its level of scratch and dent resistance and a life span of more than double the expected. Vinyl windows are only expected to last for around 20 years before they need replacing or repaired, whereas aluminium windows are seen to last around 45 years on average and possibly even longer. Overall, aluminium windows hold a better structural strength and have more features that contribute to their lifespan, such as withholding extreme weather conditions with vinyl windows cannot.

Thermal Efficiency

Whilst vinyl windows provide great thermal efficiency, aluminium windows also produce good thermal efficiency features, however, as aluminium is metal it means it is a good heat conductor. This means there is a greater heat loss in winter in comparison to vinyl windows.

Vinyl windows are naturally far more energy efficient as aluminium windows need a thermal break installed to help with the increase in thermal efficiency.

Appearance

Appearance is all about preference, each home has its own style and different window styles match these. Aluminium windows suit a modern look whereas vinyl is considered a contemporary style. With general appearance, aluminium can be touched up with enamel paint if there is any wear or marks on show to keep the product looking as new as possible. This can’t be done for vinyl windows as paint doesn’t adhere to vinyl well.

Cost

It’s often that vinyl windows have a cheaper upfront cost, as aluminium windows have a greater cost than vinyl parts. Although vinyl windows are cheaper, aluminium lasts much longer therefore purchasing these can save you a large amount of money in the long run. As aluminium is also resistant to damage, you can save on having to keep these windows in good condition and their long life span.
