Introducing the GPD80: Glideline's Aluminium Glazed Pivot Door

The GPD80 is a fully glazed aluminium pivot door built for residential entrance applications. It is not a repurposed window system or a rebadged import. It is a purpose-designed pivot door, developed from the ground up to give installers and homeowners a high-performance, made-to-measure glazed entrance door that is straightforward to specify, order and fit.

Why we developed the GPD80

Pivot doors have grown steadily in the UK residential market over the past few years. Homeowners are increasingly drawn to the scale, the clean sightlines and the sense of light and openness that a large glazed entrance door creates. Architects and specifiers have been designing them into projects for longer still.

But when we looked at the options available to trade installers in the UK, we saw a gap. Many pivot door systems on the market are either very high-end bespoke products with long lead times and complex ordering, or they are adapted from other door or window systems that were not originally designed for pivot operation. We wanted to offer something in between: a properly engineered, fully tested pivot door system that a trade installer can specify confidently, order efficiently and fit without unnecessary complexity.

The GPD80 is our answer to that. It sits alongside our existing sliding door, bifold door and residential door ranges as part of a complete aluminium door offering from a single manufacturer.

What the GPD80 is

The GPD80 is a fully glazed aluminium pivot door. The door panel is predominantly glass, held within slim 80mm aluminium framing, creating a large transparent entrance that lets natural light flood into the hallway and frames the view from both sides.

It is designed primarily as a front entrance door, but it works equally well as a rear entrance, a garden room entrance or any opening where you want the impact of a large glazed panel with the balanced movement of a pivot mechanism.

Every GPD80 is made to measure. There are no stock sizes. Each door is manufactured to the exact dimensions of the opening, which means it fits the project rather than the project having to fit around the door.

Whilst the GPD80 has been developed as a glazed pivot door, it is also available with a choice of 56 decorative aluminium door panels. This allows homeowners to create a more private entrance while retaining the scale and operating characteristics of a pivot door. The result is a system that can suit both highly contemporary glazed entrances and more traditional front door designs.

How the pivot mechanism works

The GPD80 uses a concealed pivot system with a floor-mounted pivot pin at the bottom and a matching pivot at the head of the frame. The door panel rotates on this vertical axis rather than swinging from side-mounted hinges.

The pivot point is offset from the panel edge, which means one side of the door moves outward while the other moves inward when it opens. This creates the smooth, balanced rotation that pivot doors are known for. Despite the maximum size of the panel, up to 2.1m wide and 3.0m high, with a maximum sash weight of 160kg, the balanced pivot geometry means the door feels light and controlled in operation.

Because the pivot hardware is concealed within the frame and the floor, there are no visible hinges on the door face. The result is a clean, uninterrupted appearance on both the interior and exterior. All you see is premium-grade aluminium with a gorgeous colour finish and quality safety glass, with the view beyond. Or, for your front door, a comprehensive choice of panel designs.

How we build GPD80

The GPD80 was designed in-house by Glideline. The engineering is built around a robust 80mm thermally broken aluminium profile with multi-chamber construction. This profile depth is not arbitrary. It provides the structural rigidity needed to support large, heavy glazed panels while maintaining the thermal performance expected of a modern external door.

The frame and sash

Both the frame and sash profiles are 80mm deep, with matching sightlines that give the door a balanced, clean appearance. The multi-chamber design within the profile improves thermal insulation by creating isolated air cavities that slow heat transfer through the aluminium. A polyamide thermal break separates the inner and outer faces of the frame, preventing the cold bridge that would otherwise make a metal door unsuitable for external use.

Glazing

The GPD80 accepts glazing units from 28mm to 64mm thick, which covers everything from standard double glazing to high-specification triple glazing. With triple glazing and a low-emissivity glass unit, the door achieves U-values from 0.77 W/m²K. This comfortably exceeds current Building Regulations requirementsand well positioned for the tighter targets expected under the Future Homes Standard.

Solar control glazing is available as an option for south-facing or fully exposed installations where heat gain needs to be managed.

Threshold

The GPD80 features a flush threshold designed for clean integration between internal and external floor finishes. This supports barrier-free access and the kind of seamless indoor-outdoor transition that contemporary entrance designs demand. Integrated concealed drainage within the threshold manages water run-off without visible channels or raised sections.

Performance and testing

The GPD80 has been independently tested across all key performance areas for an external entrance door in the UK. These are verified test results on the actual GPD80 system, not theoretical projections.

Pivot doors don't close on a fully rebated frame, which makes weather performance testing particularly important. Here's how the GPD80 performed:

Air Permeability. Class 4 (EN 12207). The highest possible classification. Tested under pressures up to 600 Pa.

Water Tightness. Class 5A (EN 12208). Tested as fully unprotected. No canopy, no porch, no overhang. The door withstood 200 Pa of water pressure for 35 minutes. For a pivot door without a full rebate, this is a strong result. In a sheltered entrance, it is more than adequate.

Wind Resistance. Class 5C (EN 12210). The highest possible classification on both pressure (2,000 Pa) and deflection. It does not get better than this.

Thermal Performance U-value from 0.77 W/m²K with triple glazing, comfortably exceeding current Building Regulations and well positioned for the Future Homes Standard.

Security has PAS 24, which the door has tested and passed on a reference doorset of 1.2m x 2.0m, meeting the UK's enhanced security standard for residential entrance doors.

In the context of pivot doors that do not have full frame sealing, our performance figures are excellent.

Configurations and design flexibility

The GPD80 is available in several configurations to suit different entrance designs. The door can be specified as a single pivot panel, or with one or two sidelights to create a wider entrance composition. Sidelight layouts include single sidelight (left or right), double sidelights (symmetrical), and offset configurations for asymmetrical openings.

The door is available in open-in or open-out operation, and a range of sub-cill sizes allows the system to accommodate different floor levels, drainage requirements and installation conditions. This flexibility means the GPD80 can be specified for a wide range of entrance situations without compromise.

Colour and finish options

The GPD80 is available in over 150 RAL powder-coat colours, with 7016M (anthracite grey) and 9005M (jet black matt) as standard finishes. Textured finishes are also available.

For projects where a metallic or natural metal appearance is preferred, the GPD80 is available with anodised aluminium finishes. Standard anodising is Class 15 (15–19 micrometer coating) for general external use. Class 20 anodising (20–24 micrometer coating) is available for more demanding environments including coastal locations, industrial areas and properties near swimming pools. The anodised range includes silver, bronze, champagne, stainless steel, copper, gold and several brushed and re-polished options.

Wood-effect powder coating is also available for projects where the warmth of a timber appearance is wanted without the maintenance. Options include oak, pine, walnut, sapele, cherry and chestnut finishes. Dual-colour specification is available on request.

All our powder coated finishes are to the internationally recognised Qualicoat Standard. Anodised finishes again to the official Qualanod Standard.

Where the GPD80 fits in a project

The GPD80 is designed as a glazed entrance door. It suits projects where the entrance is intended to bring in natural light, frame a view, and create a sense of openness and scale at the front of the house. The large glass area and slim framing make it feel less like a traditional solid front door and more like a window you walk through.

It works particularly well in the following situations:

Contemporary new builds where the architectural language calls for clean lines, minimal framing and maximum glass at the entrance.

Renovation projects where the homeowner wants to transform the entrance with a modern, light-filled door that makes a statement without overwhelming the frontage.

Properties with sheltered entrances, for example a porch, recessed doorway, canopy or overhang. These sheltered entrances provide some weather protection and the glazed panel or decorative style can be appreciated from both inside and outside.

Rear and side entrances where a pivot door creates a generous, light-filled opening connecting the house to a garden, courtyard or terrace.

The GPD80 is not designed to replace a standard hinged front door on every home. It is also designed for projects where a standard door is not enough. For example, where the homeowner or the architect wants something with more scale, more glass, and more presence at the entrance.
